I Am That Child grew out of Elizabeth’s sabbatical journey to Cameroon in 2008. It
took her over the threshold of the fledgling Good Shepherd Home Orphanage where, in
short order, she was embraced by its founder, Sister Jane Mankaa, and the AIDS
orphans in her care. The protective gear she packed for the trip was no match for the
infectious love she met. The stories of those with whom she travelled and among whom
she lived unfold in short, lively chapters that take the reader on a fascinating tour
among the people of this remarkable community.

"'Can you imagine there were people in this town who looked at these
children differently because they were orphans? They were the rejected ones,
even by their teachers. The fact that most of their parents died of AIDS gives
them even more of a stigma,' he [the Anglican chaplain to the Home]
lamented, shaking his head. 'They are the face of AIDS in Africa today. These
innocent children who are still alive are the suffering silent ones in this great
tragedy." (p. 51)

Free Soil is a haunting and gripping exploration of Liberia’s complicated history. In
Free Soil, Diane narrates a story that describes the journey of free blacks from
America in the early 1800s to their settlement in Liberia. With vivid characters, she
details the deeply rooted class division she witnessed and the dynamics that
influenced the coup d'état that ended 160 years of settler dominance.
Zenobia couldn’t hear for the raucous amen chorus surrounding her. The
floor seemed to vibrate and the walls shake. I’m connected to Nelson
Mandela? “Speak on it!” she yelled, waving her hand and surprising herself.
“Diaspora,” she shouted. This time, a fire ignited inside her, and everything
that mattered to her changed.
